AI Policy
Project Censored, including its publishing imprint The Censored Press, does not publish content generated by large language models (LLMs) or other generative AI tools. This is because we do not deem such work to be “original.” In other words, these programs can not, and absolutely should not, write for the author. (For more information about what we mean by this, read Cal Newport’s article “Stop Filling Your Mind With Digital Doritos.”)
AI is trained on massive amounts of human-created work, much of which has been appropriated by AI developers without proper permission or compensation, meaning using AI-generated text amounts to borrowing work without giving proper credit. Moreover, work generated by LLMs risks being inaccurate and lacking artistic value.
Censored Press authors do not need to disclose the use of AI programs, such as grammar check software, that are employed for copyediting or research purposes. We strongly discourage the use of generative AI software during the brainstorming or outlining stages to ensure the author’s voice is preserved in their manuscript.
